SOTA is always an adventure for me. This one gave me some fun challenges. It all started as I was planning my trip. Looking at the summit on Google Maps I found this to be on the patio of a private residence. That is probably not a good place to request permission to operate from so I looked a bit further. KN6CCW, the first activator, had done some due diligence and discovered a water tank in the immediate vicinity. Hmm, water flows down hill and this is a highly likely target. The location was well within the rules from the W6ARM (W6 Association Reference Manual). Cut out of context from the ARM “…80 vertical feet of the actual summit point…” I found his solution to be well within the spirit and intent.

Being a Geocacher I had one more resource. In the old days of the Geocaching hobby one could get credit for finding National Geodetic Survey (NGS) Benchmarks in addition to caches. There were no caches in the immediate area, however, there was one nearby NGS Benchmark PID EV3688 ( http://www.geocaching.com/mark/details.aspx?PID=EV3688 ). From here I found the Jobs Benchmark datasheet ( http://www.geocaching.com/mark/datasheet.aspx?PID=EV3688 ).  The NGS information shows an elevation of 5395 feet at N 34° 15.433 W 117° 19.900 which is 8 feet above the SOTA point at 5387 feet. Being 8 feet higher than the ARM Summit information is well within the 80 foot requirement.  In the contour of that area this Benchmark is an approximate horizontal distance 655 feet from the summit using Google Earth. So, the water tank Benchmark was now my target.

Next adventure. It is now time to drive up there. Using my faithful street navigation software I only got lost two times. I recovered from that and did some driving around twisty narrow country roads touring the houses.  This lead me right back to the water tank as the only viable place to operate from. The area is residential homes almost everywhere on the restricted roads with no place to park. Another activator in the years to come could possibly find a place closer to the summit. Personally, I think the Benchmark at the Water Tank is the highest point and the Summit.

RED TAPE NOTE: Do Not park blocking the road to the water tank. The very nice and friendly guy from the water company drives up this to take some readings in the morning. He even asked about what I was doing. Simple solution, park in the lot across from the water tank.

The escapade continues during the activation. I noted that is was 34 degrees F when I arrived. It was the same temperature when I went QRT. For a spoiled Southern California man this is a bit brisk. With multiple layers, a hat, and gloves I was able to operate with a few warm up breaks. Band conditions were tough on 40 meters when I started. It took 3 moves until I got to a good frequency. Later in the day on 15 meters I started to get some good DX. After several DX I decided to call CQ DX ONLY. That call killed the band instantly.

T-Mobile Cell service is intermittent there so voice, SMS, and data was limited. Adding insult to injury I was only able to get out one APRS2SOTA SPOT. I tried three times to get out APRS2SOTA message for other SPOT’s which never even reached the network.
