With our current high temperatures in Southern California we have done several SOTA (Summits On The Air) outings on ‘drive up’ activation’s. This was another delightful one. Although you could get to this with a 2 Wheel Drive “High Clearance” vehicle I had the pleasure of going here in Ken’s (KN6CCW) 4X4. Both gates were open today.

Getting there: Turn off highway 38 technically is at approximately: 34.19231 -116.71918 (N 34° 11.538 W 116° 43.151). You are now on Pipe Road. It is a dirt road from this point to the summit.

Turn right off Pipe Road toward Onyx on at the 1N01 intersection which is well marked. The Geocache: 1N01 Onyx Summit Junction  GC1FE0X N 34° 12.044 W 116° 42.854 is at that intersection. Drive to the communications complex where you will easily find the bench mark and summit log.

Geocache: Onyx Summit  GC1209K  N 34° 11.519 W 116° 42.526 is about 300 feet past the summit. There are many other Geocaches along the route.

Redtape: We had my lifetime adventure pass on the dash board, however, there was no one at the site or on the road the entire day.

Operational Notes:

This was a very quiet site considering how much RF was there. We had no interference on HF or 2 meters which was an unexpected pleasure.

We passed the microphone back and forth on all of our rigs several times. Ken had a lot of fun with pile ups that would appear for a few minutes after he called CQ relentlessly with no takers. I think our goal to get points out to as many chasers as possible was a success.

There is always one fish that gets away. This time it was Charles, KM6CEM, who we could hear periodically and were never able to contact.

T-Mobile & AT&T cell service was so poor that we were not able to post a SPOT via SMS or the Web. I did use APRS to SPOT which worked very well.
