Martin, WN6E, has a great Toyota 4X4 and the skills to handle it over these fun roads. Today we activated SOTA (Summits On The Air) on two adjacent peaks. Cleghorn Mountain W6/CT-0112 at 1625m (5331ft) and Point 5699 W6/CT-099 at 1737m (5699ft).

Cleghorn has many paths that cross each other and a few that go off trail. We did detour unintentionally down one that was a dead end. Getting there: Take the 138 to Forrest Road 2N47 at 34.300528, -117.336973 (N 34° 18.032 W 117° 20.218 or N 34° 18′ 01.908″ W 117° 20′ 13.092″). It is about 7 miles from here to the summit at 34.294201 -117.412498 (N 34° 17.652 W 117° 24.750 or N 34° 17′ 39.12” W 117° 24′ 44.99”). Martin found the summit register and we set up our stations. The wonderful local Chasers did SPOT’s for us although we did have excellent APRS coverage so we could have used APRS2SOTA. There are some short video’s that will be available for 1 year at Cleghorn Video’s (expires 8/2015).

The entrance to Point 5699 is about a mile from the entrance we took above. You get off the 138 at Cleghorn Road and start at Forrest Road 2N49 34.287208, -117.360818 (equivalent to N 34° 17.232 W 117° 21.649 or N 34° 17′ 13.956″ W 117° 21′ 38.952″). This 9 mile dirt road is a 4X4 path for the last mile to the summit at 34.258301, -117.366699 (N 34° 15.498  W 117° 22.002 or N 34° 15′ 29.88”  W 117° 22′ 0.12”). This road is surrounded by plush green vegetation and trees. We will probably return here for a longer activation. The wonderful local Chasers did SPOT’s for us. We had excellent APRS coverage so we could have used APRS2SOTA. We had T-Mobile cell service so some SMS SPOT’s were posted.
