Cerro Noroeste is a wonderful “Drive Up” activation via a paved road until the last few 100 feet when you walk to your site. Martin, WN6E, has a great Wavetraveler Blog (Click here for a new window) with some awesome pictures.

The official name for Mt. Abel is Cerro Noroeste at W6/SC-001, at 8,300′ (2530m), an 8 pointer. We went directly there after leaving Frazier Mtn. Simply go back to the intersection at Lake of the Woods.  Turn left as if you are going toward Mt. Pinos on Cuddy Valley Road.  After about 5 miles, you will come to an intersection with Mil Potrero Road to your right (north and then west).  Turn on this road, proceeding 7 miles west passing through the village of Pine Mtn. Club until you reach Apache Saddle, a Forest Service work site.  Turn left here to continue to the campground at Abel / Cerro Noroeste. These perfect directions from WA9STI matched my navigation software for every turn. I had programmed it for the summit.

Now for some of the bad news. As expected there was No T-Mobile cell service. I suspect this is the same for other providers as this is a bit remote. It does have good APRS service so that is how we did SPOT’s. Another thing we did wrong is send out a Activation Alert very late in the day. It is unlikely that it was seen by very many Chasers. Our SPOT information was also late in the day so many chasers were already off line as an activation this late is not seen very often. It took us several hours on multiple bands to complete our 4 SSB contacts. VE2JCW took the extra time to work my weak signal and even put out a SPOT for me. We could not get any contacts on 146.52 FM. We did not think to call out on the repeaters down the hill to solicit simplex contacts.

I had an ideal station with a large selection of tall trees for my long wire. Each of us set up on different picnic tables to reduce interference with each other.
