KN6CCW, Ken, was our guide to Keller Peak W6/CT-013 (2403 m / 7881 ft). Martin, WN6E and I have been doing some early morning “Drive Up” Activation’s to avoid the hot California summer. We drove along highway 18 out of Running Springs to a well marked turn off for Keller Peak road (34.20356, -117.08797 or N 34° 12.214 W 117° 05.278 or N 34° 12′ 12.816″ W 117° 5′ 16.692″). This is a paved road all the way to the Fire Lookout. At 34.19928, -117.04524 or N 34° 11.957 W 117° 02.714 or N 34° 11′ 57.408″ W 117° 2′ 42.864″ there is a gate which opens to the public daily from 9am to 5pm. Please tour the Fire Lookout while you are here. We took a hiking path slightly away from the lookout and set up our stations there.
Charles, KM6CEM, was on frequency waiting for us. We abused Ken for our SPOT’s as he had good AT&T service. Martin and I had no service on T-Mobile until we left the dirt path. APRS was working great so that would have been an alternative for SPOT’s. We walked back and forth between each other’s radios to make various S2S contacts. At one point we were pointing a 2 meter beam at the home for N0OI and not having much luck. Later we found out he was actually on a summit when we worked him easily on HF.
I may duplicate some of Martin’s pictures however you should look at his Wavetraveler Blog (click here for a new window).
