We departed from Neil’s home in Anaheim Hills very early to avoid traffic and the weekend tourists in the mountains. The first thing we noticed is that the routing software shows Kratka Ridge, W6/CT-014, in the middle of Highway 2 so there is only a 1 minute difference if we went via La Canada Flintridge or from the Highway 15 entrance via the 138. I had programmed the GPS 60 with a parking place at 34.35142, -117.89706 (equivalent to N 34° 21.085 W 117° 53.824). This puts you in the parking lot at the driveway to the now abandoned ski area. My smart phone has a dumb user so it’s navigation failed today. Good thing I carry a traditional GPS.
It was a bit brisk as we started our steep uphill walk. By the time we got 1/4 of a mile up we took off our outer layers of jackets as we had warmed up from the climb. My post GPS statistics from this trip yielded: started 6811 feet; gained 727 feet; summit at 7538; one mile each way; 13.1% grade. I would advise you to take the road even though you might be tempted to take the direct route straight up the ski lift path. At 0.15 miles before the summit is the only way point Geocache on this road (Ski Kratka Ridge! http://coord.info/GC1A42G GC1A42G). This was Neil’s first Geocache which had the added bonus of having a trackable in it. The hike is up a road until the last 250 feet which is a small single track trail to the ridge. The walk is in plush green trees with small patches of snow on the side of the road. The summit has plenty of room for a multiple operator set up so we got a bit of physical separation to improve our operation. The views at the ridge today were terrific.
We operated several different bands so we did not interfere with each other as much. We were very pleased to have so many chasers considering they could have been working the big DX contest. I got to work one contact on 20 meters while Neil was changing his battery. I got a Hal, N6JTZ for my only contact on this band.
Sorry, there are Way to many pictures – enjoy.
